My Old Favourite Seems So Poor Now
Well, it's been two and a half months since I cancelled my Star Wars Galaxies account, and as some of you know your character is permanently wiped after three months.
So, I paid the £8.20 or so on my credit card and I logged back in to my old favourite game to save my character. Then, wow, I had no idea how different everything would feel.
The controls, the graphics, the sounds, the environment, and the entire "feel" of the game seem so mediocre and half-arsed to me now. My eyes are open to how much of a grind the game really is, as it's got practically no quests (anyone who calls GW a grind should really try SWG).
I thought that the game was completely crummy once the "combat upgrade" was released, now that I've played Guild Wars all that time it feels a hundred million times worse. Needless to say, I think I'll be cancelling again today and throwing my discs away once and for all.
Anyone else had similar experiences with old favourites?

Yes ma'am (It's ma'am, right?). I was an ADDICT to Anarchy Online and spent 3 years paying out of my butt to keep my account running. Well, recently they launched another year to their "Play free sans upgrades," and the AO detox didn't run it's course... So I started up a new account. I'm even more glad I quit. I quickly realized how.. crummy the graphics engine is, how broken the game is, and how lame some people can be. Sure, I was happy to see it all again.. For a little bit.. But now that I look back at it, I'll never play untill they release Anarchy Online 2 with an engine that has quality near Guild Wars'.

Hi, my name is Caco Cola and...and...I'm a UO addict!
I played this game for several years, I believe 6 to be exact. Was my favorite game and, if it were still like it was before Trammel was introduced would still be.
But now it's just...meh. Stupid. The only good thing now a days is the custom house system. That shit is awesome. And the ideas some people have, pretty freaking cool.
But yah I haven't played UO in quite some time.

I was a Call of duty man, i was good at it, VERY good but now im just totally absorbed into GW. The graphics and smoothness of play aswell as its constant care and updates and massive things to do, in both pvp and pve keep me hooked.

neverwinter nights for me....
had a few servers that i called home, but i havent toched the cd since i got guild wars.
mainly cause i have a thing where i pay a game to death till i tire of it, but also cause i was getting tired of the servers i was in...the graphics and gameplay are ok still, its the peeps i got sick of...(all i ever got to meet there, even though they were supposed to be RPG servers, and yeah, loads of peeps are rp'ers there, were jerks
yet my friend, he meets mostly RP'ers...mind u, he plays an elf with a fancy RP'ing sounding name, and plays around the time the americans hit the servers, while i have human chars with not so RP'ish names and end up paying while the yanks are at work and its just the brit-kids...and i do mean kids...sigh)

Quake 3 Arena
Holy crap...I adored that game. Spent a couple years of my life in it playing online.
And then all those mods came out...the ones where your guns fire like 1,000 BFG bullets that then proceed to explode into grenades on impact. And the mods where your shotgun fires like 20 railgun shots.
Not fun...not fun at all.
Kinda neat fireworks though.
And still a shitload of fun. Go Quake 3! (Anyone who says Unreal Tournament is better can stuff a sock in it! Quake was here first!)

Total MOHAA (Medal of Honor Allied Assault) and Call of Duty person. I still play a few fps type games. But ever since i got into RPG type games I'm becoming absorbed with them. Principa, I too used to play SWG, and it's been about four months since i cancelled. To me, that game was a total grind, almost pointless. When I hear people complaining about the grind in GW i laugh. Yeah, sure it's a bit of a grind....but really, give me an MMORPG, or onling RPG that isn't a little bit of a grind.

A few years ago when I tried to play daggerfall on my 1gig PC. Looked old and I think it ran too fast to enjoy.
Euro, I don't see AO2 coming out for awhile because FUNCOM is working on Age of Conan now (which looks nice).

Heh, I played Enemy Territory for a good year and a half to two years before I got tired of it and moved on to Call of Duty and its expansion. I tend to drift between FPSs and RPGs a lot. I also tend to overplay any decent game I get my hands on until I drive it into the ground after finding every serious fault with it, proceed to question the validity of the game and why I wasted so much time on it, and then get a new game and repeat I altogether stopped playing CoD:UO when I got GW but I go back and play it every once in awhile late at night on some fun servers that are full of drunk Americans and Brits

AO and SWG are both ones that I tried to get into again and just couldn't.
On a happier note: BG2 still rocks my socks off.

I really miss SWG myself although i wouldnt go back. Its past memories and will stay that way to enjoy that thought.
I think SWG had more than grinding to it. I never grinded myself. I spent my time visiting locations, completing quests and seaching for rare items. I spent most my time in the game as a carbineer/Ranger(bad choice with the carbineer i know) and after about 7 months as a carbineer/Ranger I droped Ranger for creature handler, held that for a couple of weeks then droped the both for TKM and Doctor and spent the rest of my time as that raiding all the strong location with a few friends. Any spare time i had i would spend fighting for the city i lived in against the rebels .

Actually principa SOE say they will keep the accounts for 3 months and they MAY delete them after 3 months. But I left for 5 months last yesr and when i came back everything was still there. They have been saying they will do an inactive player purge for well over a year before I left in may. But they had'nt done yet. I agree the combat "upgarde" complety ruined what WAS the best MMORPG currently avaiable. I agree the graphics in GW are SOO much better that swg. I might go back in a month and see if there are any of the guild used to be in are still there.

Ah well, they can delete my account whenever they like. It's been cancelled again already. Maybe when SOE learn to make a video game that isn't a pile of steaming turd, I'll check it out.

yep.
As much as I'd love to go back to SWG, I can't. Not yet. Maybe not ever.
My style of play was very similar to DraieGardo's, so the changes really stung.
I did pay 6 months maintenance on my houses before I cancelled, though, so I guess I'm hoping SOE "fixes" things, but I'm not counting on it!

If you can call it that. They changed the entire way that combat was coded into the game and was used by the players.
They also happened to break it all, dumb the whole thing down to child-like levels, and add countless new bugs and exploits to the game in the process. Forgot to mention that.
Put it this way, if they never introduced their "combat upgrade" I wouldn't have looked once at Guild Wars, it was that good before they broke it. I guess it's for the best though.

They basicly took out SWG's GOOD battle system and put in EQ2's crappy one. Made it so you HAD to hunt in groups or you would die in seconds. Where as before you could solo IF you wanted to.
Nerfed some professions into uslessness. Eg Rifleman BEFORE CU could do about 3k dps with his best shot (bare in mind most high level mobs had 10's of 000's of HP or even 100's) After CU they can do at about 70 dps. Mobs still had the same amout of HP.
PRE CU All crafters could ware ANY armour they wanted. POST CU they could'nt ware ANY and so died in 1 hit to basicly anything.
They complety changed all the resources for all the weapons, armour and medic stuff so all the resources people had spent the last 2 years geting where now useless. And thats just a lil of what they did.
If it where not for the CU I would also still be playing. As SWg did have the BEST crafting system i have EVER seen in a game. Before they dumed it down so the kiddies could do it that it is.
